Louis ABEL-TRUCHET (Versailles, 1857-Auxerre, 1918) - Lot 123
Louis ABEL-TRUCHET (Versailles, 1857-Auxerre, 1918) A Parisian Boulevard at Night Carton signed lower right. 13.5 x 18 cm. The Haussmann-style buildings of the boulevards dissolve in the half-light of a winter evening, while passers-by and horse-drawn carriages are reduced to a procession of shadows. This subtle pochade is by one of the finest painters of Belle-Epoque Paris, a mainstay of Montmartre and its cabarets, known as much for his keen observation of Parisian mores as for his participation in the Salon des Humoristes and the "vachalcades" of the Quat'Zarts. Abel-Truchet's allusive treatment of silhouettes and façades can be compared with another small canvas recently sold at Millon (December 7, 2023, lot 48).
