STENDHAL (Henry BEYLE dit) - Lot 116
STENDHAL (Henry BEYLE dit) Journal de Voyage de Bordeaux à Valence en 1838 published with an Introduction and Notes by Louis ROYER. Paris, Horizons de France, 1927. In-8 : XXX , 1f., 302pp. 1f. ; one map and one fold-out facsimile. Edition of 2125 copies, this one on Arches (no. 314). ½ burgundy morocco with long-grained corners signed AUSSOURD, ornate ribbed spine, publisher's beige cover, gilt head. Although a very late original edition, these fragments had remained in manuscript as drafts. Important study by ROYER on this text. Reprinted in 1930 by Henri MARTINEAU under the title "Voyage dans le Midi de la France". Bayonne, Saint Jean de Luz, Fontarabie, Pau, Tarbes and Auch. He didn't go as far as Lac de Gaube, as Flaubert did, because of an alleged error in weather forecasting: "Go and get the heat in Marseille. If I find it, take advantage of it to update this diary, then, when it's no longer cold, return to Tarbes or even here [in Pau] and, by the little stagecoaches, go to Oloron, Bagnères, etc., in order to catch a glimpse of the Pyrenees, if I can. (So far, they look a bit like Pygmy mountains to me)". Provenance: Copy of Pierre Caillau-Lamicq (Sale 2005, no. 202).
