17th CENTURY FLEMISH COLLECTION - Lot 17
17th CENTURY FLEMISH COLLECTION The Martyrdom of Saint Matthias Canvas 52.5 x 59 cm (Old restorations) Saint Matthias, an apostle appointed not by Christ himself but by the Apostolic College to replace Judas Iscariot, after evangelizing Judea, suffered martyrdom: stoned and then beheaded with an axe. The axe became his attribute, making him the patron saint of carpenters, butchers and tailors.
