17th CENTURY FLEMISH SCHOOL, FOLLOWER OF RUBENS - Lot 41
17th CENTURY FLEMISH SCHOOL, FOLLOWER OF RUBENS The Abduction of Ganymede Canvas. Height: 67.5 cm, Width: 50 cm. Bears a number 2 on the reverse of the stretcher. (Old restorations). From the composition in the Prado, Madrid. This painting illustrates the ancient myth recounted by Ovid in his Metamorphoses, in which the god Zeus, in the form of an eagle, abducts the young Ganymede, "the most beautiful of mortals", to introduce him to Olympus as cupbearer to the gods. The vertical, dynamic composition conveys all the expressiveness of Flemish Baroque. Ganymede is captured in full flight, his naked body contrasting with the eagle's dark feathers, while the stormy background accentuates the scene's dramatic tension.
