ATTRIBUTED TO François VERDIER (1651-1730), after Charles LE - Lot 42
ATTRIBUTED TO François VERDIER (1651-1730), after Charles LE BRUN Alexander and Porus Canvas. Height : 67 cm, Width : 158 cm. Remake of the large composition in the Louvre by Charles Le Brun, painted around 1672-1673. This canvas illustrates the ancient episode of the encounter between Alexander the Great and Porus, king of the Pauravas, after the battle of Hydaspe in 326 BC. Defeated but dignified, Porus impressed Alexander with his poise and courage. Asked by the conqueror how he wished to be treated, he replied: "Like a king. Impressed by the panache of this reply, Alexander gave him back his kingdom and granted him new territories. This scene embodies the ideal of a noble soul shared between conqueror and conquered, expressed here with all the grandeur and theatricality typical of the Grand Siècle.
