This merry drinker embodies a rare moment of freedom in the art of living during the Age of Enlightenment.
Far from codified aristocratic meals, he pours his own wine into a flared glass, bottle in hand and tea towel on forearm, in the familiar atmosphere of a rustic kitchen. The wine is tasted, accompanied by bread and carrots, without pomp or domesticity. A second glass in the foreground suggests the presence of a guest - perhaps the painter himself.
A lively, precious tableau de société, witness to the private pleasures of the 18th century.
