Ludwig PASSINI (1832-1903) - Lot 63
Ludwig PASSINI (1832-1903) Princess Rospigliosi and Baroness Baude Pencil and watercolor, signed lower right and dated "1863". 46 x 38 cm. Antique label on the back: "Princesse Rospigliosi, née de Nompère de Champagny de Cadore - 13 septembre 1825 + 9 mai 1899 - Baronne Baude (standing) née de Nompère de Champagny de Cadore - Painted by Passini in Rome in 1864". Daughters of diplomat Louis Alix de Nompère de Champagny, Duc de Cadore, Fanny and Marie-Adélaïde married into prominent families. In 1846, Fanny married Clemente Rospigliosi-Gioeni, Duke of Zagarola, becoming a member of the Italian nobility. She died in Florence in 1899. Her sister Marie-Adélaïde married Georges Napoléon Baude, future French ambassador to the Holy See, in Rome in 1863. This refined portrait was entrusted to Ludwig Passini, a Viennese painter based in Italy, renowned for his genre watercolors. Trained in Vienna and Leipzig, Passini worked in Rome and Venice, gaining recognition throughout Europe, winning medals in the great artistic capitals and the Légion d'Honneur in 1878. Despite the high status of the Nompère de Champagny sisters, the painter's pose is natural and benevolent, particularly in the case of Princess Rospigliosi.
