Louis Henri DELUERMOZ (Paris, 1876-1943) ? - Lot 65
Louis Henri DELUERMOZ (Paris, 1876-1943) ? Painter at his easel Oil on canvas mounted on panel, monogrammed and dated 1902 lower right. 78 x 51.5 cm. 2 500/3 000 € Henri Deluermoz, illustrator of Kipling's The Jungle Book, trained by Alfred Roll and then Gustave Moreau, was recognized by Gérald Schurr as "one of the finest animal painters of his time". His broad, stylized style lends a highly personal vision to his works, which include decorative panels populated with wild animals. In this work, probably a self-portrait, we see a young man with a beard and a cigarette, working in an improvised studio. The eye is drawn to a shelf cluttered with objects - plants, a plaster bust, flasks, a spinning wheel - while the canvas in progress remains mysterious, turned away from the viewer.
