Jean BOUCHAUD (Saint-Herblain, 1891-Nantes, 1977) - Lot 83
Jean BOUCHAUD (Saint-Herblain, 1891-Nantes, 1977) Arab women, Algiers Watercolor gouache on paper pasted on cardboard, signed lower left. 32.5 x 24.5 (view). On the back, label with title. Jean Bouchaud was one of the great painters of the Colonial Empire in the twentieth century, celebrated in his own lifetime and then relatively forgotten. A tireless traveler, he spent time in Morocco, Indochina and Black Africa. A resident of the Villa Abd-el-Tif in 1921, he painted these Femmes d'Alger, probably inspired by the rare local models to which he had access.
