Henry SOMM (Rouen, 1844-Paris, 1907) Christmas Watercolor and ink wash over pen and ink, signed lower right and titled lower left. 20.5 x 15 cm (view). Henry Somm, trained in Rouen and later by Isidore Pils, made his debut in 1870 with burlesque etchings. A prolific illustrator, notably for Le Chat Noir, he excelled in watercolors, between Japonism and Impressionism. His lively sketches of Belle Époque Parisians include boudoirs, cafés-concerts and Montmartre. A friend of Toulouse-Lautrec, he took part in the IVth Impressionist Exhibition in 1879.
