Henry Somm, trained in Rouen and later by Isidore Pils, made his debut in 1870 with burlesque etchings. A prolific illustrator, notably for Le Chat Noir, he excelled in watercolors, between Japonism and Impressionism. His lively sketches of Belle Époque Parisians include boudoirs, cafés-concerts and Montmartre. A friend of Toulouse-Lautrec, he took part in the IVth Impressionist Exhibition in 1879.
