RED-FIGURE HYDRIA - Lot 208
RED-FIGURE HYDRIA whose body is adorned with two young women standing on either side of a stele encircled by a knotted ribbon and surmounted by a wide, gadrooned kylix cup. The two women are dressed in long chiton and hold a mirror and fan. The area below the rear handle is decorated with elegant palmettes and scrolls. The neck features an olive leaf frieze and the base of the scene a Greek frieze. Details are painted in white and yellow. Black glazed beige clay with white and yellow paint highlights. Old restorations (probably 19th c.), otherwise well preserved. Old patina. Greek art, Apulia, circa 340 B.C. H. 32 cm. A number 10 is inscribed under the foot. Appraisal by Mr. Antoine Tarantino.
