BRONZE GROUP WITH BROWN-GREEN PATINA - Lot 247
BRONZE GROUP WITH BROWN-GREEN PATINA representing Theseus and the Minotaur Signed Barye and founder's mark: F. Barbedienne Fondeur. After Louis Antoine Barye (1795-1875). Late 19th century. H : 45 cm, W : 29.5 cm, D : 16 cm. This is a posthumous casting by the Barbedienne foundry of a model developed in its second version in 1857 (the first version dates from 1843). A similar bronze was sold at SGL Auctions, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, on February 26, 2022, lot 165. Theseus, prince of Athens, volunteers to be one of the young men sent to Crete as a sacrifice to the Minotaur, the half-man, half-bull monster trapped in the Labyrinth built by Daedalus. With the help of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete, who gives him a thread to find his way home, Theseus manages to kill the monster and escape, becoming a hero symbolizing the victory of intelligence and courage over barbarism.
