APOLLONIUS the Sophist - Lot 21
APOLLONIUS the Sophist Apollonius the Sophist’s Greek Lexicon of the Iliad and the Odyssey. First published from a manuscript codex in Sangerman, corrected of countless errors, distinguishing and indicating passages from Homer and other poets, illustrated with notes and continuous annotations, and accompanied by a Latin translation, Johannes Baptista Casparus d'Ansse de Villoison. Paris, J.C. Molini, 1773. 2 volumes in one in-4 volume; complete with the 9 engraved alphabet pages by Drouet. Text in Greek and Latin in mirror layout. Contemporary marbled fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, red title label missing, minor damage to the cap bands, central gilded Bignon coat of arms, gilded roulette on the corners, scuffs and normal wear, red edges. First edition of this Greek lexicon by Apollonius, a unique 10th-century manuscript, published by the Hellenist and philologist Jean-Baptiste-Gaspard d’Ansse de Villoison, who accompanied Choiseul-Gouffier to Constantinople before spending several weeks in the monasteries of Mount Athos searching for manuscripts in the libraries. Ansse de Villoison was the first to draw parallels between the spoken Greek language and traditional customs and those of antiquity. Provenance: From the collection of Jérôme-Frédéric Bignon (1747–1784), counselor to the Second Chamber of Petitions at the Palace, who succeeded his father as the King’s librarian and served as a counselor of state (OHR 872).
