Kabbalah - Lot 31
Kabbalah [BOYER d'ARGENS (Jean-Baptiste de)] Kabbalistic Letters, or Philosophical, Historical, and Critical Correspondence between Two Kabbalists, Various Elemental Spirits, and Lord Astaroth. New expanded edition. The Hague, Paupie, 1741. 6 volumes in-12. Contemporary glazed marbled fawn calfskin, ornate ribbed spines, blond title labels, bronze volume numbers, a flat-topped cap at the head, damage to two lower caps, cold-stamped fillets framing the covers, gilt roulettes on the edges, slight scuffs from use, red-speckled edges. The Kabbalistic Letters are one of d’Argens’s crowning achievements, straddling the boundaries of philosophy, pamphleteering, and journalistic criticism; they were published as serialized articles in the *Gazetier Universel*. The work was placed on the Index. The author explores certain themes from the *Lettres juives* in greater depth, particularly regarding religions, superstition, and various forms of belief; the work contains numerous critical observations on the Jesuits, Freemasonry, Kabbalah, the Knights Templar, alchemists, etc. A declared enemy of religion, the author describes the flaws and absurdities of various denominations, targeting the Jesuits in particular (Dorbon 985–987).
