[CRÉBILLON (Claude-Prosper Jolyot de)] - Lot 44
[CRÉBILLON (Claude-Prosper Jolyot de)] Tansaï and Néadarné: A Japanese History. Beijing [Paris], n.p., 1758. 2 volumes, in-16; illustrated with 4 separate plates and a frontispiece. Bradel-style cardboard bindings with rear Bradel bands, smooth spines, black title labels, red volume numbers, and gilt fillets. Copy with full margins. A progressive and revolutionary utopia set in an imaginary, egalitarian country; a scathing satire against Cardinal de Rohan, also targeting the Jesuits, the Pope, and the Duchess of Maine. Crébillon was imprisoned for a time at the Château de Vincennes following the publication of this work.
